When should I contact LTI via lti-research@andrew.cmu.edu?
As soon as you know that you will be receiving an industry proposal, please reach out to LTI Research so that we can start working on the documents for the SPARCS proposal
When is the deadline for SPARCS proposals?
OSP needs at least 5 business days in advance of any submission deadline. OSP instituted a policy in Jan. 2022 that asks departments to submit proposals 5 business days prior to the deadline to guarantee submission.
What documents are required for the SPARCS proposal?
- Title & SOW: One paragraph that describes in detail the research taking place.
- Completed Budget: Work with your Research Administrators to discuss the budget via email.
- PI effort
- PhD student coverage
- Postdoc coverage
- Computing costs
- Capital equipment
- Other direct costs
- Indirects and benefits
- Travel: How many domestic/international trips will be required? How many individuals?
Please Note: we do not provide full detailed budgets to industry sponsors when discussing proposals, but instead provide a simplified version that removes salary information
- Budget Justification: Created by the Research Administrator
- Proposal Solicitation: For industry, this is not as clear as for federal, for example NSF. For industry, this can be an email exchange with the sponsor where they expressed interest or intent to fund a proposal. Sometimes there is a formal CFP.
- Proof of Submission: For industry, this is less clear than for federal sponsored research. OSP is looking for an indication of what was submitted to the sponsor (For example, the budget or SOW?) and this can also be in the form of an email.
- PI Assurance Statement: Provided by the Research Administrator, signed by the PI.
What are some other questions to keep in mind that will affect the proposal:
- Is the sponsor domestic or international?
- Is there a subaward/subrecipient? *
- Is there a contractor (professional service agreement)? *
- Is there cost share involved?
- Is there human subjects research?
*Requires an additional set of paperwork from the sub/contractor and will increase proposal preparation time.
